Frequently Asked Questions

1.          What is a banner?
An old (since "barnstorming" days) but unique form of messaging, where a sign is towed behind a small airplane or helicopter for people outdoors to see. Today's "banners " are typically one or a combination of three basic types: The letter banner (picture 1), the logo banner (pic2), or the billboard  (pic 3). Logos and billboards may also have a trailing message attached (pic 4), depending on the customer's needs.

2.   What's so special about a banner?
Traditional forms of advertising  TV, radio, etc., sometimes tend to get overused to the extent that people "tune them out" - not so with banners. When someone sees an airplane with a sign in tow they almost always instinctively look to see what the message is. It makes them curious, nostalgic, whatever  and they usually remember it for a while.

3.    How much does a banner cost?
Generally, for a one time contract with up to fifty characters, including spaces, $400 the first hour, and $200 every hour after (prorated). Add $25.00 per hour for over fifty characters.  Billboards cost $300 per hour. Special rates can be quoted for a commercial, repeat, or contract agreement.

4.    What can I say?
Anything you want except something that could be construed as lewd or defamatory. The characters are 5 ft. high in red. You can use dashes, exclamation
points, commas, numbers, etc. Other colors are also available.

5.          How close (low) can you get?
1, 000 ft. above ground level over towns or densely populated areas, 500 ft. in sparsely (rural) areas and over water. Banners can be easily seen from 1,000 ft. (about a football field length) away.

6.          What times are available?
Any day of the week from one hour after sunrise to one half hour prior to sunset (Must allow time for aircraft to return to the field).

7.  How much notice do you need?
One week advance notice is usually required for a banner. More time is required
for special  signs, boards, different color characters. Message must be given at time order is placed; contract with deposit must be received  prior to performance.

8.   How good does the weather have to be?
There needs to be a minimum of a 1500 ft ceiling. above ground  both over the display area and enroute; no obscuring phenomena such as rain, snow, etc. and no severe wind present.  If the weather on your day is questionable, it's up to the pilot whether on not to fly. If the flight cancels due to bad weather, it can be rescheduled. If you choose not to reschedule, a $50 banner set-up fee will be charged.

9.   What about cancellations and refunds?
Cancellation must be made 24 hours prior to takeoff time.  Any expenses incurred by Beltway Banners (banner assembly, special letters, etc ) will be deducted from the refund. Beltway Banners will make a full refund for cancellations due to mechanical problems, FAA restrictions, or other unforeseen events.  Or you have the option to reschedule for another date.

10.           What about message changes?
There will be an extra charge for sign changes after deposit is received @ $50.00 per hour. It usually takes 1  3 hours to make up a banner.  (The fee for the original banner is included in the initial price.)

11.           Can I make the banner myself?
No.  Banners towed by aircraft are especially made for that purpose and must be FAA approved.
